I’ve just had an offer from my agent to work at the National Museum of Ethnology as an administration staff member, but it has not been decided yet, which reminded me of the last year’s fun memory of the exhibition mentioned below.
I went to the exhibition about the history of Japanese show tents at the National Museum of Ethnology in October last year.
These tents would closely resemble what was considered a freak show. The exhibition was amazing, not only academic, but also rich in variety including freak shows, mechanical dolls like automated and 3D models of horrible sights of murder or something like that! I love USJ horror nights and I go every year.
This exhibition impressed me with the same taste of horror as the USJ Horror Nights.
Before I went there, in order to feel the atmosphere of those times for reference, I watched the 80’s famouse cult film, “Shojyo-Tsubaki”, which means camellia japonica girl.
Do not watch this if you have no tolerance for grotesque cruelty.
It shows us chaotic Tokyo just after World War II, where people had to survive (even those who were orphans and physically handicapped like the characters in this movie), and how people were eager for amusement!
It is a sad, scary and grotesque story, but a masterpiece I think. I enjoyed the feeling of the atmosphere of early Showa-era. Too shocking to sleep tonight…
Sorry it was not Showa-era! It was Meiji-era, because I saw the picture of the Emperor Meiji was displayed in the movie.
